History
TMFI was founded in October 2008 as a Forensic Front Office including forensic advice, subcontracting work to other providers/specialists. Not much later DNAlysis was founded in March 2009 in Maastricht as the forensic DNA-laboratory to provide in house forensic DNA-services and biology casework witness statements. Both were partially owned by the Maastricht University. In December 2016 both companies merged to continue operating as TMFI.
In 2017 sales increased significantly following the winning of a contract initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice. As a response to the changing forensic landscape and in preparation of this contract, TMFI merged with local competitor Verilabs - adding an office in Gouda, near Utrecht, for paternity DNA services - and started a collaboration with Eurofins as a subcontractor.
In December 2019 Eurofins and TMFI made the next steps in their successful collaboration when Eurofins acquired TMFI as new forensic laboratory in the Eurofins Forensic Division, enabling knowledge sharing and experience as well as developing new services.
TMFI
TMFI is the first and only institute in the Netherlands to combine the technical forensic examination of items/samples with legal psychological and behavioural scientific expertise from institutes such as Maastricht University. The Company holds ISO-17025:2017 accreditation, is scientifically motivated and works independently for the police, prosecutors and magistrates. TMFI has approximately 20 staff members divided over two locations, the forensic team is located in Maastricht and the paternity DNA team is located in Gouda.
Paternity DNA
Under the trading name Verilabs, TMFI provides legal and private paternity DNA services. In legal paternity cases the whole process from sample taking, identification and witnessing until reporting the results in a witness statement is covered by accreditation. Moreover, it is fully compliant with the local legislation enabling the use of results in Courts and legal proceedings. The private paternity services concern so-called peace-of-mind testing, without legal status.
Forensics
TMFI offers a range of biology casework and forensic DNA related in-house services, such as Case Assessment & Interpretation (CA&I), Cold Cases, Sexual Offenses, DNA on ammunition specialist techniques, all serious crime incl large investigations, high impact and high-volume crime services, and urgent services. TMFI is located in a large facility that is connected with the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC).
Besides in house work, TMFI is also the front office to the Eurofins Forensics Division for Dutch customers, offering local contact and support with access to a broad range of services including but not limited to: Toxicology, Drugs (traces), Finger Marks, Marks & Traces, Digital Forensics, Questioned Documents, Gun Shot Residue, Firearms and Ammunition. TMFI and colleague Eurofins experts work together to deliver excellent results to the Dutch criminal justice system, e.g., with a collaborative process for Dutch sexual offences, combining the local knowledge, language, DNA-database access and expert witness capabilities of TMFI with the comprehensive experience and specialist methods such as SpermTrap from Eurofins Forensic Services UK.
